SAS WC Dabbie Camp at IYC 6-7 Sept 2014

“Well done to all on another great SAS WC Dabbie Camp which was held at IYC last week-end 6-7 Sept 2014!! 5 Star food by gourmet moms Lynn Hoyle, Kim Strutt, Marion Foreman and Cheryl Thorburn and some really hard work by our excellent coaches, thank-you James Stock, Kevin Foreman, Patric Loydell and Luke Sher for the huge effort you made to help every sailor with personalised on the water training. We had a couple of newbies who were taught the basics in 2 days, and ended the Camp smiling, and able to sail. A big thank-you also to Steve Deuchar for organizing the coach boats, and Barbara Sher for the great photos. Finally, we would also like to extend our thanks and appreciation to Dave Hudson and Stephen Du Toit for their excellent presentations. Dave managed to reduce the RRS to 8 important Rules, and to explain their applications practically, in easy to understand terms, with reference to actual incidents on the water, and Stephen gave us all a very valuable lesson on the basics of not only how to sail, but also on what needs to be understood and done in order to sail well!”

Regards
Mark Sher

History of Supa Sails South Afica

Supa Sails may be a new name on the South African sailing scene but at the helm of the company is the well known South African sailor and sail maker, Rob de Vlieg. Rob started his sail making career in Durban, then moved up to Johannesburg to open the Musto and Hyde loft in 1974. This later became the well known Hyde loft, a name that Rob dropped recently to start the Supa Sails label. During an illustrious sailing and sail making career which saw Rob becoming a double Springbok and Yachtsman of the Year , and with sails designed by Rob winning countless National titles as well as 2 World Championship titles, Rob has seen many changes in the development of sails and sailing classes as well as changes in world markets. This has led to our market shifting from the traditional Dinghy Racing classes in which Rob was so very active, to the Racing Keelboat classes, and our markets shifting out of South Africa and into Europe. Currently the company manufactures sails for various sail makers in Europe in countries such as England, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Holland. These cover Dinghy classes like Optimists, 505, Flying Dutchman, and Keelboats up to 27 metre. In terms of Cloth suppliers we only deal with the best, namely Contender Sailcloth in Holland and Dimension Polyant in Germany.

Eleven Year old to compete at Melges 20 World Championships

by Michelle Slade, Marin Independent Journal

LIAM-620x350

by Michelle Slade, Marin Independent Journal
Racing this week at the 2014 Melges 20 World Championships, 10 days after his 11th birthday, makes Liam Kilroy the youngest helmsman ever at a Melges world championship. Kilroy will be the youngest helmsman competing by a good 10, even 20 years, at the Lake Garda, Italy event that will start racing Wednesday and run through Saturday.

The Melges 20 World Championships is not a children’s regatta. It is an elite international adult event and Kilroy will be racing against a fleet of the most talented, recognized athletes in sailing, including former world champions, Olympic medalists and America’s Cup racers. Some 56 boats from 10 countries are registered to race.

One may ask how a kid gets to be so hooked on sailing – and so skilled – so young. Raised in a family with a pedigree sailing background has certainly helped: his dad John Kilroy Jr. owns the highly successful Samba Pa Ti West Coast-based sailing program. John Jr.’s father – Liam’s grandfather – is Jim Kilroy (aka John Kilroy Sr.) of Kialoa fame who was just inducted into the U.S. Sailing Hall of Fame as their first Lifetime Achievement Award winner.

Kilroy has been training hard all year for the Worlds, racing FJs with high schoolers in San Diego and this summer alternating between two-week 29er sessions at the Richmond Yacht Club, and training hard during 10-day to two-week training sessions with his Melges-20 team. – Read on

Teams from Italy, United States, Russia, Czech Republic, Japan, Germany, Canada, Austria, Monaco and Denmark will be gathering on Lake Garda. Seeking to defend their title is reigning champion John Taylor on Ninkasi with tactician Bill Hardesty and Joey Mello. Event website
