It was decided that there were enough novices to run a separate course for them. Bill Webster, assisted by Matthew Bennett were their race officers, and sailed them in the protected waters of the creek.
The rest of the boats were sailed in North Bay.
The Dabchicks battled to make class as at least 4 boats were unable to attend for very valid reasons. Euan Hurter traveled up from Natal to steal the trophy with a well earned first place and the first under 15,watch this space. The class numbers may have been small, but competition was tough. Euan didnt win em all, Megan Eccleston,Warren and Julian all having a turn. Last years winner,Warren is about to age out and is getting to big for a Dabbie, but still proved that he could hold his own. Alexander Ham was consistent and on the pace.Stefan,who we haven’t seen in a while was back, but I think his mind was on things other than the regatta.In true Dabbie spirit, racing was tight and the camaraderie excellent.
A common start was set for all classes with Oppies starting first, Open Mono Hulls & Dabbies second and Multi Hulls third. Oppies sailed a trapezoid and finished at a separate finish line which was run by Merle and John Samuel. The Dabbies and Mono Hulls sailed an Olympic course and the Multi Hulls sailed a windward leeward course to red markers placed outside the Dabbie course.
Friday, 24th September
Started racing at 11h05 in a light 4-5 knot northerly wind. At 11h40 it died and started to swing from N to W to SW. The race was abandoned at 11H44. At 14h00 a new breeze filled in from the NW but was short lived. At 16h00, sailing was abandoned for the day.A Day for Volleyball and an evening of Karioake followed.
Saturday, 25th September
Started racing at 09h05 in 5-8 knot N’ly wind. After the finish of race 1 it was decided to change the order of starting as the Multi Hulls were on their downwind leg were crossing through the Oppi fleet which were on their reach. It was felt that due to their differential speeds this was not desirable. From race 2 onwards the Multi Hulls started first, Dabbies and Mono Hulls second and Oppies third.
The wind held and at the end of race 3 everyone went in for lunch.
Race 4 was started at 14h55 in NNW’ly at 10-12knots. Race 5 was completed in an 8-10 knot N’ly wind and that concluded sailing for the day.
The evening was taken up with AGM’s. Warwick Ham & Paul Eccleston were voted in,by the sailors, as new regional reps to take over from Owen Baxter who stood down after a 5 year spell.The class is in good hands and will grow from strength to strength.
Sunday, 26th September
Started sailing at 09h05 in a NNE’ly 12-15 knot breeze.
4 races were sailed during the allocated time with the wind switching to the N and gusting 18 knots at times.
Another race could possibly have been sailed but the 30 minute cut off time between the first and last boat delayed the sailing somewhat.
However, 9 races were sailed in fair conditions, testing both the skill and fitness of the competitors.
