I really had to smile when we parked an Oppie and a Dabbie on the Ocean Sailing academy site at the Boatshow.(Thanks OSA)On the one side of the stand was a motorboat valued at R500K and on the other Wetbikes at only R157,000 !!!! Across the way was a Pacer 27 towering over most of the boats on show. I also saw a strong Hobie contingent in attendance.
Our sailors took it in turns to man the stall and talk to people about the sport we love. It is amazing how many old Dabbie sailors come out of the woodwork, some even as old as me.Thanks to the ethusiasm of our sailors I am sure that we will receive many enquiries. I will post some pictures soon.
The Dabchick class will be joining up with the Optimist sailors from the 17 th of August till the 19th to exhibit a Brand new Dabchick belonging to Julian Wertheim Aymes . A comprehensive Brochure explaining the benefits of Youth Sailing in Gauteng has been drawn up and hopefully we will be able to draw some new recruits.

Mark Dingley reports from Australia that he has received the plans and that AUS 1 is already under construction.
We have also had a request for plans from the UK and Steve Du Toit will be visiting Geoff in the UK to discuss possible Dabbie’s in kit form with him.

Brad Bell reports from Ebenezer Dam that the 2 Dabbies he purchased have been refurbished and launched at their Youth regatta. His 2 young sailors, both very small, really impressed by their speed compared to the 09 ers etc which previously ruled the waters. This has resulted in Brad returning to Hartebeespoort to purchase another 2 Dabbies for their club. He is in the process of sanding and painting these as I write this. I am watching this with interest as we need to support these types of efforts, not only for the class, but in the interests of youth sailing.
Who knows, maybe we will have to stage another Provincial one of these days.

After a hectic week of e-mail debate it seems that common sense has prevailed. A vote of thanks to David Booth and his team for accommodating our point of view. What we as a class need to ensure is thay we turn out in force, enjoy the sailing and social side to make this event one to remember. I quote Davids e-mail for your attention.
2 Dabbies have been bought from a sailing school at Hartebeespoort Dam and have been relocated to Ebenezeer Dan yacht club in the Mountains near Tzaneen. After painting and refurbishment they should be launched very soon.I am hoping that other sailors who see these boats may also badger their parents for one.
We have received a request for plans from New Zealand where ex South Africans wish to build Dabbies for their childeren.
Mark Dingley in Australia is in the process of getting ready to build and both Cor Langhout and myself have rounded up second hand sails for them.
In NorthVaal I am aware of at least 3 new dabbie sailors who have acquired boats for the new season.
This always great news and we need to welcome everyone, show them ropes and encourage more to join our fraternity.

There have been many e-mails flying around on the subject of our class sharing a course with Lasers at the nationals.
I have been in touch with the organizing committee who have advised me that the reasoning behind this was a cost issue. Both David Booth and Roger Bartholomew have all assurred me that our Class will get our own course and this will be communicated shortly.
Lets all keep calm and let the committee do its thing. In addition, lets encourage one another to attend so that it cannot be said that our request was not justified.
Watch this space.
