Latest on 2007 Course issue

After a hectic week of e-mail debate it seems that common sense has prevailed. A vote of thanks to David Booth and his team for accommodating our point of view. What we as a class need to ensure is thay we turn out in force, enjoy the sailing and social side to make this event one to remember. I quote Davids e-mail for your attention.

Hi All

The following were agreed at the recent Classes meeting.

There will be 4 courses:

  • Optimist
  • Dabchick
  • Laser - the number of starters will be dependant on the number of entries per Laser Formula.
  • Hobie Dragoon 420 and Mirrors

The novices will be also catered for as a separate function.

A deadline of 31st October has been agreed as the deadline for the above classes to enter a minimum of 10 entries to be accepted as a class at the Youth Championships.

Theewater SC has consulted with SARS and as they are a VAT registered Club SARS states that all entries must be inclusive of VAT. Therefore the following entry fee have been set including VAT. R315.00 across the board.

Championship medals will be presented as per SAS requirements. Each class would provide there own prizes. The Optimist class had been allocated the Championship Program to assist them raise funds towards their Worlds team funding.

The SAS age requirements will apply, subject to class rules: “Open to all sailors who will not have attained the age of 19 before 31st December 2007.”

Now with these factors agreed I will put forward the application for SAS’s sanction and NoR. I will also amend the TSC information sheet on their website.

Yours in sailing

Dabchicks never die

2 Dabbies have been bought from a sailing school at Hartebeespoort Dam and have been relocated to Ebenezeer Dan yacht club in the Mountains near Tzaneen. After painting and refurbishment they should be launched very soon.I am hoping that other sailors who see these boats may also badger their parents for one.

We have received a request for plans from New Zealand where ex South Africans wish to build Dabbies for their childeren.

Mark Dingley in Australia is in the process of getting ready to build and both Cor Langhout and myself have rounded up second hand sails for them.

In NorthVaal I am aware of at least 3 new dabbie sailors who have acquired boats for the new season.

This always great news and we need to welcome everyone, show them ropes and encourage more to join our fraternity.

Nationals 2007 Shared courses

There have been many e-mails flying around on the subject of our class sharing a course with Lasers at the nationals.

I have been in touch with the organizing committee who have advised me that the reasoning behind this was a cost issue. Both David Booth and Roger Bartholomew have all assurred me that our Class will get our own course and this will be communicated shortly.

Lets all keep calm  and let the committee do its thing. In addition, lets encourage one another to attend so that it cannot be said that our request was not justified.

Watch this space.

Prior to the Dinner the Annual Interclub Team racing event was staged at VLC. The race Teams were made up of 3 boats (sprogs) and different colour sails were used to indicate teams. The event is worked out on a round Robin basis with boat changes on the water between races. Two Jury boats were on the water and many a transgression resulted in penalties being awarded by Judges. Last years winners, VLC conceded defeat to a strong Team from Pretoria. 5 Dabchick Skippers represented their respective clubs.

Gareth Baxter and Tim Gibbons shared first place in the NVL Grand Prix series for 2006/2007.In third place was Ryan Hadley followed by his brother, Warren in 4th. The sailor with the best result in first season was James MC Wha.Gareth Baxter won a mainsail and Warren Hadley a jib in the annual lucky draw.

The annual Junior Dinner,  is usually a Dabbie Oppie affair , held at VLC. For the first time this year, the Cats attended and presented awards to their deserving sailors. An interesting presentation was delivered by Mike Sadler (father of Mark) on the Americas Cup. The Mirrors also presented a show of their worlds held in Port Elizabeth.

As usual the food was great and plentiful. The evening was enjoyed by all those who attended.
