The last regatta in the Northvaal Grand Prix series finally got underway last saturday. The wind played ball and some excellent racing was had. Gareth Baxter dominated the regatta winning all 7 races. 4 Races were completed on the Saturday.Matthew Bennett, Mr consistent, held in there to produce a fine second but not without serious challenges from the Hadley brothers. Warren Hadley in paticular showed that the older sailors had better keep an eye on him often challenging for first spot.Gillian Meintjies was not on form after a long layoff but I know that she will be back. Angie had the misfortune of breaking a toestrap which kept her out of some of the races.
The Grobler brothers competed 2 up, the way the Dabchick was designed. I am sure with a little more experience and coaching these guys are going to take off. The wind was a little strong for Bianca on Saturday but she came out on the Sunday to sail 2 races.
Sunday was cold but the wind held to allow a further 3 races to be sailed.
It was a pity that the postponement from the previous weekend did impact on the numbers, but having said that ,those who took part had a great end of season sail.
The Picture gallery has been updated.

Only one race was started on saturday which was eventually abandoned when the wind died completely. The start saw Gareth and Warren going right and picking up the wind first . Tim Gibbons worked his way up the fleet passing Warren into 2nd but was still quite away from Gareth when the plug was pulled, just as Gareth drifted towards the Leeward mark.A good decision by the Race officer.
On Sunday the wind appeared much to late to allow enough time for the requisite number of races to be held. By concensus it was decided at a skippers meeting to postpone until next weekend. Many skippers have a lot riding on their result in this regatta results and need to participate to secure final GP placings.
Lets go and support the regatta with the same numbers that turned up this weekend
Regards

A quick note to let everyone know of the existence of the new site gallery - available now at www.dabchick.za.net/gallery. Email us any and all photos to add…
Also just to note that the reason that the images are so big when you view them is because I thought that most would prefer larger images - I’ll work on some system for making them smaller soonish, but the point is they are there and everything is still usable.

I received the following Mail from Mark Dingley in Australia.I have sent him some more pictures and I hope to send a set of 2nd sails soon.
Cor was kind enough to e-mail me a copy of a set of plans originally drawn in 1956 which I have started transferring the information into CAD format which I can then transfer to our Computer operated overhead router giving me precise accuracy with all the components. Once this is done I will make a couple for our yacht club as it has a great little sailing school and will be a great springboard into the Australian market…well heres hoping. More than that I keep looking for pictures for design ideas, rigging etc.
As far as up to date technology is concerned I will be drawing on your expertise. I understand there are fibreglass boats in production in SA. Are there any other advances in the class….remembering it was over 20 years ago I was racing Dabchicks.
Thank you
Mark Dingley
PS: If you have an old set of Sails I would pay to have them shipped out here. I have a couple of close friends in the sail making industry, I could get to create a pattern for AUS 001

The final event in the series takes place at VLC on the 12th and 13th of May. The final positions could well change as the points difference between some sailors is not that big.
This is the Last Dabchick event of the season so lets all turn out in force.
See you there.

I have updated the National Rankings, but as only one provincial has been sailed, they only reflect the postions after Western Cape. The next 3 Provincials all happen around September this year,so watch this spot.
Please mail me with any corrections etc
